Google将Android更新义务写入与制造商的合同。据TheVerge报道，Google的安全团队每月都会为Android发布一套新的补丁程序提供给运营商和手机制造商。但是根据The Verge获得的一份保密合同显示，安卓设备制造商有明确的义务帮助制造商完成这些补丁更新。

根据合同，Android设备制造商至少两年内定期安装所有手机或平板电脑的流行更新。而谷歌与Android合作伙伴的合同规定，他们必须在手机发布一年内完成“至少四次安全更新”，且也在第二年内被强制执行。

这些条款涵盖了2018年1月31日后生产的超过10万名用户激活的所有设备。从7月31日开始，修补要求被应用于制造商75%的“安全强制模型”。从2019年1月31日开始，Google将要求所有安全强制设备接收这些更新。制造商必须在特定的时间范围内修补由谷歌标识的缺陷。到每个月底，覆盖的设备必须保护超过90天前识别的所有漏洞。

谷歌表示，如果制造商未能及时更新他们的设备，就可能会推迟对未来手机的批准，从而阻止手机上市。
